TO INVESTIGATE THE RECENT CUSTODIAL DEATH AT BATHINDA AND POLICE ENCOUNTER NEAR PATIALA
Chandigarh, 10 June (2025): The Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO) today expressed concern over the increasing incidents of Police excesses and decided to investigate the recent death of a teacher in the Bhathinda Police custody and killing of Canadian PR Jaspreet Singh in Police encounter near Patiala in last March.
The meeting held under the Chairmanship of PHRO Chairman Justice (Retd.) Ranjit Singh observed that Punjab Police seemed to have been enjoying un-restricted powers/freedom similar to those of the 1990’s days. As a result, the police have become autocratic and been indulging in gross violation of human and civil rights.
Nearly two week ago an English Teacher Narinderdeep Singh was given inhuman torture by the Bathinda Police. As a result, he died in Police custody. In other case, a Canadian PR Jaspreet Singh was killed near village Mandaud in an encounter by Police near Patiala in last March.
The meeting also decided to strengthen the Organisation enlarging its membership and broad-basing it in Punjab. The first step will be setting up of its committees at district levels.
It also appealed to justice loving and pro-democratic Punjabis to come forward and join the Organisation.
Malwinder Singh Mali, Dr. Piara Lal Garg, Advocate Rajwinder Singh Bains, Dilawar Singh, Tarjinder Singh and Dr. Khushhal Singh attended this meeting.
