A meeting was held in Chandigarh to demand inclusion of Garhwali Kumaoni language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution

Today, a meeting was organized by Uttarakhand Lok Bhasha Sahitya Manch at Chandigarh Garhwal Bhawan for the promotion of Garhwali Kumaoni language. Many dignitaries participated in this meeting under the chairmanship of Garhwal Sabha President Vikram Bisht.

The main issue of the meeting was to convey to the Central Government the demand for inclusion of Garhwali Kumaoni language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. During the meeting, Gurbaksh Rawat, a popular councilor of Uttarakhand from Chandigarh, requested the people of Uttarakhand and said that we all should speak in our Garhwali and Kumaoni and write and read these languages.

It is very important to propagate our language among the new generation and have knowledge about its behaviour, studies and writing. Many scholars in the world believe that dozens of languages, including Garhwali and Kumaoni, are in danger today, whose speaking, writing and reading is decreasing day by day.

If the situation continues like this, then one day no one will speak our language and we will have to make every possible effort to save this language which is the heritage of our ancestors and may become extinct due to our carelessness.

Consideration should be given to maintaining our culture, customs and identity. Dinesh Dhyani ji from Uttarakhand Folk Language Literature and Delhi Forum said that for this, the forum has been organizing literary honors and language seminars in the name of great poet Kanhaiyalal Dandriyal in Garhwali language since last 2012.

Since then the Forum has been continuously making efforts to save these languages and to get the languages a place in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. If Garhwali Kumaoni language is included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, then many new schemes will be made through the Central Government for the development of our language and the government will provide financial support for the promotion of the language. Our language will be included in the curriculum for children in NCERT.

Due to which children will gain knowledge of Uttarakhandi language, language promotion will also increase. Gurbaksh Rawat and Vikram Bisht appealed to the visiting dignitaries to connect the Uttarakhandi people of Chandigarh with this campaign and provide maximum support.

In the program, advisor and patron of the forum Jaipal Singh Rawat, coordinator Dinesh Dhyani, Jagmohan Singh Rawat, Raisingh Bisht – General Secretary Tehri Garhwal Development Council, Dhirendra Singh Rawat – Head Tadkeshwar Art and Cultural Mandal, Chandigarh, Mahindra Rawat from Pauri Garhwal Ekta Manch, Shakti.
